Trojan wrestlers compete at Redwood Valley; Lady Jays still No. 1

The Worthington Trojans' boys wrestling team was defeated twice Tuesday during a triangular meet at Redwood Valley.


The host Cardinals defeated WHS in a boys match, 51-24. Earning points for the Trojans were Bly Scott, who won by fall at 121 pounds, and Sam Dagel, who won by fall at 127. Dominic Larson won by forfeit at 107, as did Miguel Moreno at 133. Redwood Valley, meanwhile, earned 42 points via the forfeit route at 114, 145, 152, 160, 172, 215 and 285 pounds.


In a match against Wabasso, Worthington was beaten 55-17. Larson won by fall in 42 seconds at 107, and Dagel was a victor by technical fall at 121. Dalton Larson earned a triumph via forfeit at 215.


In girls wrestling, the Trojans were by Redwood Valley 18-12, with Giselle Martinez at 124 and Joleen Hernandez at 136 each picking up points for WHS. Wabasso knocked off the Trojans 24-6, with Peer Htoo getting Worthington's lone points at 112.


Worthington will host its second and final home wrestling event of the year starting at 5 p.m. Thursday. It will be a triangular event that also includes teams from Marshall and New Ulm.

For the second consecutive week, Minnesota West is the No. 1 team in the NJCAA Division 3 Women's Basketball poll.


The Lady Jays picked up all eight first-place votes to hold down the top spot after winning in an 84-point rout at Riverland on Jan. 14 and posting a 37-point home triumph over St. Cloud Tech on the 18th. Minnesota West sports a record of 15-5 on the season.


A pair of Minnesota rivals remain in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the poll. Northland Community & Technical College, which is 14-3, is ranked second, and 15-4 Anoka-Ramsey is third.


In other Lady Jays news, Minnesota West guard Payton Reimers earned the MCAC South Division Women's Basketball Athlete-of-the-Week award for the week of Jan. 12-18. Reimers went 9 for 18 from the field and eight-for-eight from the free-throw line, and she scored 27 points in the Lady Jays' two wins. Reimers also grabbed 13 rebounds, had seven assists, stole two balls and blocked two shots.


Maddie Kamm, the Lady Jays point guard, earned the same award in the previous week. Kamm scored 32 points, had eight rebounds, assisted on 12 baskets and grabbed eight steals, helping the Lady Jays to two wins, including a three-point triumph over then-#1 Anoka Ramsey. Kamm shot 85% from the field and 100% from 3-point range.
