Trojan volleyball team tops New Ulm in four; WHS boys soccer wins 3-2

The Worthington Trojans volleyball team lost a late first-game lead Tuesday night at home against New UIm, but then reeled off wins in games two through four to beat the Eagles by scores of 21-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-20.

Worthington got back-to-back aces from Mia McNab to lead 11-8 in game one, and after New Ulm later edged ahead by a point, the Trojans moved back out in front 19-16. The Eagles, though, rallied and wound up scoring the final four points of the game.

The Trojans then regained momentum by evening the match with a game two triumph, then put themselves in the driver's seat by taking game three. Trailing 17-15, back-to-back kills from Lauren Nixon and Ava Schutz knotted the score, and another Nixon kill put WHS up 18-17. Macie Mahlberg concluded the run with an  ace serve to make it 21-17, and Kamyrn Olson ultimately ended the game with an ace of her own. 

In game four, Kaitlyn Mulder's kill put Worthington ahead to stay at 12-11. New Ulm later made the score 20-19, but Kinley Riemersma's kill resulted in a two-point cushion and the Eagles never got closer.

Nixon finished with 12 kills, Schutz had 11, Riemersma 10 and Talia Nasers nine for Worthington, now 6-3 on the season. McNab and Mahlberg had three ace serves each and Thier and Kamryn Olson two each. Olson had a team-best 17 digs; McNab and Rylee Olson combined for 44 set assists.

The Worthington Trojans boys soccer team picked up a big win on the road Tuesday as they defeated Marshall 3-2.

Thomas Okony scored for Worthington in the first half as the Trojans played to a 1-1 draw. In the second half, Angel Chacon put the Trojans ahead 2-1, but Marshall soon got the equalizer. Eddy Chavez netted the game-winner for WHS with between three and four minutes remaining.

Trojans head coach Juan Flores said while it's always tough playing Marshall on the road, he thought his squad hung in pretty well. He noted that the first goal was a fluke goal that came following a great save, and that the other came on a defensive error by the Trojans as they didn't get back in time.

Flores added that his team created chances offensively, though he believed his players could have taken some shots a little earlier. "Overall, getting a win — especially on our side of the conference — is key," he said.

The Trojans are now 2-1-1 overall.

In girls soccer, the Trojans hosted Marshall at home and were defeated 7-0. Elsie Deutz scored three goals and Madelyn Hoefer had two for the Tigers, who led 2-0 at halftime. The Trojans remain winless on the year at 0-4.

In girls tennis Tuesday, WHS defeated visiting New Ulm 5-2.

The Trojans won three of the four singles matches. No. 1 seed Lily Brown took a 6-3, 6-4 victory, No. 3 seed Claire Schultz won 6-1 and 6-0 and No. 4 Isabella Poe earned a 6-1, 6-4 triumph.

The No. 1 Worthington doubles tandem of Emma Hietbrink and Madison Poe won 6-4- 6-1 and the No. 3 duo of Lisbeth Soto and LweKaPaw Ehmu won 6-3, 6-2.
