Lady Jays win first home volleyball match of season, sweep Riverland

The Minnesota West Lady Jays won their home opener — which was also their conference opener — on Wednesday night, cruising past Riverland 3-0. Game scores were 25-11, 25-13, 27-25.

The Lady Jays, who are ranked seventh in the most recent NJCAA Division 3 Volleyball Poll, improved to 9-5 overall on the season. It was a night during which multiple reserves saw action for the home squad.

In the opening game, Minnesota West — behind the serving of Aubrey Weedman — built a quick 8-0 advantage and was never seriously threatened. In game two, the Lady Jays began to deviate from the regular rotation, but they were still able to move up 2-0 in the match. Trailing 8-6, Minnesota West tallied eight consecutive points and then continued to roll from there.

Minnesota West reserves then pulled out game three, rallying from a 15-10 deficit to eventually close things on its third match point. 

The Lady Jays will next play a conference match at Century College on Friday night and then have another MCAC test on Saturday at Anoka-Ramsey.

The Minnesota West men's soccer team also played at home Wednesday night at Trojan Field and was defeated by Anoka-Ramsey 6-1.

The Bluejays are now 0-2 on the year. Next up is a Sunday match at Riverland.
