Trojan boys get back in win column; Bluejays host weeked tournament

The Worthington Trojans boys basketball team bounced back from a lopsided loss on Thursday night and beat Henning 80-56 on Friday afternoon in their second game at the two-day Fergus Falls Tournament.

 

The Trojans improved to 5-2 on the season, and Zach Hayenga and Jacari Swinea were both named to the all-tournament team. Worthington’s girls and boys basketball squads host a doubleheader Tuesday night against Western Christian. The girls will play at 6 p.m. and the boys will follow; catch the action on 104.3 The Bridge.

Minnesota West hosted the New Year’s Classic basketball tournament on Friday and Saturday, with the Lady Jays going 1-1 in the event and the Bluejay men going 0-2.

 

In women’s play, Minnesota West won its outing against Southwestern Community College 78-70 on Friday evening. The highlight of the game was Olivia Hayenga scoring her 1,000th point in a Lady Jay uniform. The Lady Jays led by 10 after the first quarter and 11 at the half, but Southwestern was able to trim the lead down to three points in the latter stages of the fourth stanza before Minnesota West ultimately secured the win.

 

Hayenga finished the game with 23 points while also adding 14 rebounds, five steals and three blocked shots. Hattie DeVries contributed 21 points and seven rebounds, and Skyla Peterson and Ava Parrish chipped in with 13 points and 12 points, respectively. Audrey Drapeau passed for 11 assists and also pulled down 10 rebounds.

 

On Saturday, the Lady Jays trailed North Dakota State College of Science by just three at halftime but wound up being outscored 27-14 in the third quarter and 23-16 in the fourth on the way to an 81-58 loss. Hayenga scored 20 points and DeVries had 18 points and nine rebounds as Minnesota West’s record went to 11-5 on the season.

 

In men’s action, it was Southwestern Community College over Minnesota West 69-55 on Friday night. The Bluejays, who made just 29 percent of their shots from the floor, got a team-high 13 points from Henry Counsel and 11 from Kenneth Logan.

 

On Saturday, the Bluejays were beaten by Iowa Central Community College 83-43. Minnesota West was down by 14 at halftime and was then dominated in the second half. Paul Fairley Jr. had 13 points in 15 minutes off the bench to lead the Jays offensively. Logan contributed 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Minnesota West, which is now 2-10.

 

The Bluejay women and men host Minnesota State of Fergus Falls in their MCAC South Division season-opener on Wednesday night. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow.
