Sports Briefs: March 1, 2023

The Jackson County Central boys’ basketball team has earned the No. 1 seed in the south half of the Section 3AA tournament. The Huskies open the postseason on Saturday at home against No. 8 St. James Area. The winner of the JCC/St. James Area game will play either No. 4 Luverne or No. 5 Redwood Valley at a neutral site on March 9. On the other half of the south side, No. 2 Pipestone Area opens against No. 7 Fairmont and No. 3 Windom opens against No. 6 Montevideo. The sub-section finals are March 11 at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. The section finals are March 16 at SMSU.

The Big South Conference has named its all-conference selections for the just-completed gymnastics season.

Making the team from the West Division were Olivia Barber, Addison Gerber, Hali Bullerman, Cristy Banegas and Kelsey Soleta of Worthington; Payten Benda and Bailey Finck of Jackson County Central; Cameen McFarquhar of Marshall; Kaysa Douty of Pipestone; Amira Cowell and Ella Reisdorfer of Luverne; and Kadyn Paulson and Ada Lund of Windom.

The Big South All-Conference girls hockey team has also been selected. First-teamers include Hadley Artz of Fairmont; Payton Behr and Kamryn Van Batavia of Luverne; Brooklyn Mauch and Regan Loft of Marshall; Presley Dockter and Marissa Becker of Windom Area; and Riley Nickel of Worthington.
