A pair of northwest Iowa high school football teams will face off in a Class 2A state semifinal matchup on Saturday when Spirit Lake takes on Central Lyon/George-Little Rock.
The Indians moved on to the semifinals thanks to a 20-19 triumph over West Lyon this past weekend. The teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 7-apiece, but a crazy last 40 seconds of play included three touchdowns and three lead changes. West Lyon had a pair of interception returns for TDs, but Indians QB Caden Lundt passed for two scores and Spirit Lake also benefitted from a kickoff return for a touchdown.
Spirit Lake, now 10-1 on the season, will face an 11-0 Central Lyon/George-Little Rock team that scored 21 straight points in the fourth quarter to beat Kuemper Catholic 48-27.
Graham Eben had 24 carries for 218 yards and four touchdowns for the Lions while Reece Vander Zee rushed 22 times for 243 yards and three scores on the ground. Central Lyon/George-Little Rock is the defending state Class 2A champion and meets Spirit Lake at 1 p.m. at the UNI Dome in Cedar Rapids.
The victor of the Spirit Lake vs. Central Lyon/George-Little Rock clash will face either Monticello or Van Meter for the state title.
