South Dakota child hurt in early Saturday crash

A 9-year-old South Dakota boy sustained a life-threatening injury in an early Saturday morning crash in Worthington.


According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2024 Peterbilt semi operated by Mitchell Lewis Young, 43, of Redfield, South Dakota and a 2011 Honda CXL operated by Mitchell Ward Conklin, 38, of Elder, South Dakota were both traveling west on Interstate 90 when they collided near Diagonal Road. The crash took place at 4:14 a.m. Saturday.


Conklin, who according to the state patrol had alcohol in his system, sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was taken to Sanford Worthington Medical Center. A 9-year-old boy in his vehicle had a life-threatening injury and was taken to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. Young, the semi driver, was unhurt.


The Worthington Police Department, Fire Department and Ambulance assisted at the scene.
