Snowstorm expected to arrive Friday in area

A major winter storm is expected to arrive in the region early Friday and continue through the evening.


The Sioux Falls office of the National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch early Thursday that extended from 6 a.m. Friday through midnight Saturday. The weather service indicated that travel could be very difficult, and that the hazardous conditions could impact morning or evening commutes, Total snow accumulations of 4 to 10 inches are possible, and isolated higher amounts may occur, Northeast winds between 15 and 25 mph are also forecast.


The highest snowfall amounts are expected from south central South Dakota into southwest Minnesota.


The weather is forecast to be dry for the next several days, with high temperatures around 25 Saturday and in the low 30s Sunday through Tuesday. Gusty winds are currently in the works for Wednesday with an accompanying high temperature of around 50.
