Search continuing in Cottonwood County for juvenile male

A 15-year-old male remains missing after an incident early Monday evening on Eagle Lake.

According to the Cottonwood County Sheriff's Office, dispatch received a call at approximately 6:43 p.m. Monday about a 15-year-old male who was canoeing with a family member on Eagle Lake. While canoeing, the juvenile male jumped into the lake to retrieve a lost oar. The juvenile male attempted to swim back to the canoe, but the wind had pushed the canoe further away from him.

The juvenile male then attempted to swim to shore. The family member lost sight of the juvenile male as they drifted further apart. There were no life jackets in the canoe.

The sheriff's office reported that a search of the shoreline and lake was conducted, and that the search was suspended at approximately 2 a.m. Tuesday. Recovery efforts were to continue after sunrise Tuesday.

The Mountain Lake Fire Department, Ambulance and Police Department, the Windom Fire and Police Department, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Minnesota State Patrol assisted at the scene.
