Ruby takes leg one of this year's Great Gobbler Gallop

It was Ruby Begonia bouncing Paycheck in Saturday’s Great Gobbler Gallop in Worthington, as the Cuero, Texas bird came away with a narrow win over Paycheck in a race that celebrated 50 years of turkey racing between the two communities.

Paycheck took a brief detour during the race, as Worthington’s turkey appeared to be more interested in 10th Street shopping at one point. He also stopped for a short time to sit in a chair along the parade route.

Ruby Begonia, meanwhile, kept up a consistent pace along the Nobles County Courthouse side of the street and was able to just hold off a fast-charging Paycheck at the end. Ruby’s final time was 1 minute, 23.15 seconds with no penalties. Paycheck was less than a second behind, but one five-second penalty was accrued. The second and final leg of the 2022 Great Gobbler Gallop will be Oct. 8 in Cuero.
