The Worthington Senior American Legion baseball team recognized several of its players with awards Wednesday night.
Recognized as offensive player of the summer were both Chase Byrne and Tucker Brandner. Byrne had a batting average of .371 and led the team with 16 hits and 10 RBIs; he had the only Worthington home run of the Legion season as well. Brandner also hit .371 in 14 games and collected 11 hits.
Named as the team's pitchers of the summer were Max Ostrem and Byrne. Ostrem had a 1.94 ERA over 36 innings while striking out 56 and walking 15, and he threw a one-hit shutout against Pipestone, fanned 13 against Mountain Lake and tossed the final inning of a no-hitter against Luverne. Byrne, meanwhile, had a 3.60 ERA over 19 innings and threw the first six innings of the Luverne no-hitter.
Dalton Larson was recognized as Post 5's comeback player of the summer after an injury-plagued 2024 season. He played all 18 games and multiple positions this past season. Highlights for him included a walk-off two-run double against Mountain Lake and a strong two-inning outing of relief pitching against Jackson.
Dominic Pavelko was this summer's most improved player, hitting .333 in 16 games with 13 hits while turning in solid defense at second base. Dawson Svalland was recognized as a graduating senior who demonstrated strong commitment to the program. He played in all 18 games in 2025 and played fine defense at first base.
Brandner, thanks to his offensive and defensive prowess, was named the team's MVP.
