Minnesota West basketball teams combine for 199 points in sweep

The Minnesota West women's and men's basketball teams recorded a home sweep Wednesday over Minnesota State-Fergus Falls to begin the conference season. The Lady Jays earned a dominating 100-51 win over the Spartans, and the Bluejay men followed that by easily beating Fergus Falls 99-72.


In the women's game, Minnesota West held a 19-18 edge at the end of the first quarter before scoring the first 20 points of the second. The Lady Jays ended up outscoring the Spartans 36-4 in the second quarter to lead 55-22 at halftime.


Minnesota West forced a total of 46 Fergus Falls turnovers and had six players conclude the game with double-figure point totals. Sadie Krahliing had 18 points, Izzy Kumper 17, Katrina Schutz, Maddie Kamm and Ayla Texley 12 each and Payton Reimers 11. The Lady Jays are now 12-5.


In the men's matchup, Minnesota West opened with a 12-0 run and led by 12, 44-32, at the half. The Bluejays then began the second half with a 16-5 burst in the first four minutes and were never seriously threatened after that.


Minnesota West got 23 points from Kewone Jones, 14 each from Keion Irvin and Austin Florence, 12 from Calvin Flood, 11 from Owen Bielke and 10 from Da'Shaundis Moore in improving to 9-7 while snapping a four-game losing streak. The Bluejays made 70% of their shots in the second half and went 61% from the floor for the contest.

The host Worthington High School gymnastics team accumulated 140.65 total points and cruised past Marshall, which had a team score of 116.9, on Tuesday night. 


Trojan eighth-grader Jada Milbrath was the all-around champion with a score of 35.3, while Isabella Lazzu was second with 34.575. Worthington has yet to lose a meet this winter.


On the vault, it was WHS's Marley Phomsatry topping all competitors with a score of 9.2. Lazzu was second with a 9.125, and Olivia Bullerman was third with a 9.1.

On the beam, Milbrath was the champion with a score of 9.125. She was followed in second by teammate Brooklyn Dykstra at 8.55 and Phomsatry in third at 8.5.


In floor exercise, Dykstra came out on top at 9.25 and was followed by Lazzu at 9.2 and Lucy Thier at 9.05. On the bars, it was Thier taking first with an 8.775, followed by Milbrath at 8.325 and Claire Meyer at 8.2.

In high school boys wrestling Tuesday night, the Worthington Trojans were defeated on the road at Windom-Mountain Lake 43-19.


Eighteen of Windom-Mountain Lake's points came via forfeits at 121, 215 and 285 pounds. Picking up wins for Worthington were: Dominic Larson, who earned a 7-1 win at 107 pounds, Kian Ling, who took a 10-7 decision at 145; Jace Riemersma-Feit, who earned a 3-1 triumph at 127; Christopher Santiago, who won 8-0 at 145; and Bly Scott, who won by fall at 114 in 3:47.
