Meyer leads WHS girls to dominant win on home golf course

The Worthington Trojans' girls and boys golf teams hosted a three-team meet Tuesday afternoon at GREATLife Worthington.


In girls competition, WHS finished with a team total of 205 strokes in easily outdistancing second-place Jackson County Central, which came in at 253. Pipestone Area also competed but did not have a full team.


For the Trojans, Claire Meyer once again led the way by firing a 45 that placed second overall individually. Ellie Drost shot a 51 that was good enough for third place. Greta Mahlberg's 54 had her fifth and Ava Schutz had a 55 for sixth.


Eighth-grader Lily Brinkman had the afternoon's best round for JCC with a 52, which was fourth-best individually. Next for the Huskies was Taylor Schultz, who carded a 61.


In boys competition, JCC posted the lowest score among three schools with 175. Pipestone Area was next at 180, and Worthington finished at 181.


The Trojans had their lowest Tuesday round from Gerrit Larson, who shot a 41 that had him second among all individuals. Cameron Krommendyk's 43 placed him third, and Blake Vosburgh's 45 had him in seventh. The other WHS counting score came from Tyson Petersen, who finished with a 52.


JCC's Tavin Miller was the meet's medalist with a round of 39. Linkon Phillips added a 44 for the Huskies and tied for fifth; Jessy Gentry shot a 45 and tied for seventh.


Both the Worthington boys and girls golf teams will host Windom in a meet on Friday afternoon.

In a Tuesday afternoon area high school softball game heard on 104.3 La Voz, Red Rock Conference-leading Adrian-Ellsworth rolled to a 17-1 triumph over Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda in a game shortened to four innings via the 15-run rule.


The Coyotes had base hits on the first two pitches to start the game, but Dragons pitcher Audrina Tiesler retired the next three hitters to get out of trouble. A-E then put up seven runs in the bottom of the first, with Tiesler's triple and Brekkyn Dreesen's double being two of the inning's big hits. Dreesen finished the game with four hits, the final three being singles.


The Dragons tacked on four runs in the second and added six more in the third to complete their scoring. Maddie Cummings and Mersaydes Marten each had two hits in the game, and Kaedyn Bullerman had an inside-the-park home run. Addyson Hendel had two hits and Ava Fisher doubled for the Coyotes; Henley Fisher scored their lone run.

In boys tennis on Monday, Worthington earned a 5-2 victory at Yellow Medicine East.


Moises Segura scored a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles, and Ryker Fricke triumphed 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Ryan Fletcher won by forfeit at No. 4 singles.


At No. 1 doubles, the Trojans' Coltin Olmanson and Cristian Miranda won a three-setter by scores of 6-0, 3-6, 6-1. The No. 2 duo of Phinneas Landers and Ben Potts also won in three, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.
