Man apprehended following Amber Alert in Iowa

An Amber Alert for a child taken by his father Tuesday from a school in Jefferson ended following a pursuit and stand-off in Plymouth County.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety reported that the situation started when the Jefferson Police Department requested assistance with a kidnapping case. Officials say Brandon Duong, 34, took his 7-year-old biological son, Bryson Duong, from Greene Elementary School in Jefferson. A court order restricting Brandon Duong from having custody had been issued in December 2023.

An Amber Alert was issued for Bryson Duong at 3:28 p.m. A few minutes before 5 p.m., law enforcement located Duong’s vehicle in the area northeast of Remsen, in Plymouth County, about nine miles south of Granville.

Duong led officers on a high-speed chase and eventually crashed his vehicle. He left the vehicle on foot, carrying the boy, and in possession of a rifle. Several law enforcement agencies responded to the area, negotiated with Duong, and eventually placed him under arrest. The child — Bryson — was placed in the care of the Department of Human Services.

The Department of Public Safety said Brandon Duong had been charged with one count of first-degree kidnapping and would be transferred to the Greene County Jail.
