Lady Jay VB player Ava Karbo earns conference Athlete of Week honor
The Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC) has released its volleyball athlete of the week awards for the week of Sept. 21-27.
Minnesota West Community and Technical College middle blocker Ava Karbo, a freshman from Ruthton, has been selected as the MCAC South Division Offensive Athlete of the Week. Karbo was remarkably efficient, recording 30 kills on 57 attempts for a .386 hitting percentage across 10 sets. She also added 12 blocks, two assists, and two digs. Minnesota West went 3-0 during the week and sat at 6-1 in the MCAC South entering Wednesday play.
Nationally, the Lady Jays remained at the No. 6 spot in the NJCAA Division 3 Volleyball for the third consecutive week when the latest poll was released Tuesday. There's now a new No. 1 team, as defending national champion Dallas College-Eastfield slipped two notches from No. 1 to No. 3. The new No. 1-ranked team is Sandhills Community College, which is located in Pinehurst, N.C.; the Flyers had previously been at the No. 2 spot and are 19-1 overall this season.
Minnesota West was 17-7 overall entering Wednesday play. It plays two road matches this weekend — at Riverland on Friday and at Western Technical College on Saturday. After that, the Lady Jays have nine matches remaining in the regular season, and all of them will be on their home court.
