It's a great weekend for Minnesota West sports as three teams get wins

The third-ranked Minnesota West volleyball team won road matches on both Friday and Saturday. The Lady Jays beat Ridgewater 3-1 by scores of 25-12, 25-19, 24-26, 25-12, and swept Minnesota State-Fergus Falls 3-0 by scores of 25-17, 25-14, 25-12.


Raya Van Beek led the hitting attack for the Lady Jays with 23 total kills on the weekend, and Sadie Krahling was next with 16. Kadyn Paulson contributed 40 total digs and Aleah Wagner added 32. Myah Dausel had three aces serves — all in the Fergus Falls match — and Lydia Moore and Kate Slettum had two each. Slettum passed for 47 set assists on the weekend. Kylee Nelson led the way in blocks with five.


Minnesota West, now 29-4, will host Ridgewater at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The fourth-ranked Minnesota West football team, meanwhile, enjoyed a dominating victory on Saturday, as it cruised past Minnesota North-Mesabi Range 77-12 in Ely.

The Bluejays, now 4-3 on the fall, have now concluded their regular season and await their postseason seeding.

In college soccer Friday night, former WHS standout Carlos Castillo scored four goals to lead Minnesota West to a 5-2 home triumph over Dakota County Technical College.


Dario Neves scored the other goal for the Bluejays, now 3-5-2 on the season, and goalkeeper Jose Sandoval made eight saves. Minnesota West and Dakota County were tied 1-1 at intermission, but the home team scored the first three goals of the second half.


The Bluejays will next host Anoka-Ramsey at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The WHS football team was defeated at Belle Plaine 31-0 on Friday night.

Worthington, which trailed 28-0 at the half, is 0-7 this fall. The Trojans managed 33 yards rushing and 34 yards passing on the night.


Quarterback Isaiah Schroeder completed 4-of-11 passes; he was not intercepted. Kevin Ramirez was the leading rusher with 27 yards. Austin Gruis has two catches for 22 yards; Hudson Scheepstra had the other two receptions.


Defensively, Fino Noeno led the way with 14 total tackles. Logan Kerkaert had 11 total tackles, including a sack, and Gruis had 10 total tackles.

WHS plays its regular-season finale on Wednesday at Tri-City United.

The Trojans' boys soccer squad will travel to New Prague High School on Tuesday to face third-seeded New Ulm in the sectional finals starting at 7:30 p.m.  There will be a fan bus (a school bus) leaving the WHS Student Lot at 4 p.m. Seats are $5, and the deadline to sign up in the WHS main office is 3 p.m. Monday.


All students grades K thru 8 must have an adult with them for supervision. Admission at the gate is $10 for adults and $5 for students.
