Area Sports Roundup: Oct. 21, 2021

The Worthington Trojans football team has drawn the No. 5 seed in the Section 3AAA football tournament and will play at fourth-seeded Luverne at 7 p.m. Tuesday.


Top-seeded Fairmont has a bye, while No. 2 will host No. 7 Belle Plaine on Tuesday. The section’s other first-round matchup had No. 6 New UIm at No. 3 Tri-City United.


The victor of Tuesday’s Trojans-Cardinals game will play at Fairmont at 7 p.m. Saturday.


In Section 3AA, Pipestone Area is the No. 1 seed, and the Arrows will open postseason play at 7 p.m. Tuesday against St. James. Jackson County Central has the No. 2 seed; the Huskies will host seventh-seeded Windom. Elsewhere, it will be No. 3 Redwood Valley playing host to No. 6 Sibley East, and fourth-seeded Minnesota Valley Lutheran taking on visiting No. 5 Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial. All semifinal games will be played beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday.


In Section 3A, state-No.1-ranked Murray County Central will play host to No. 8 on Wabasso in the first round. No. 2 Springfield will take on visiting Sleepy Eye, third-seeded Tracy-Milroy Balaton takes on visiting Adrian-Ellsworth and No. 4 Martin County West meets Russell-Tyler-Ruthton. Semifinal games will be at 3 p.m. Saturday.


In Nine-Man football, the Section 3 playoffs have Mountain Lake Area seeded No. 1 and entertaining eighth-seeded Madelia on Tuesday night. No. 2 Hills-Beaver Creek will take on No. 7 Granada-Huntley-East Chain-Truman in Hills, No. 3 Edgerton hosts No. 6 Westbrook-Walnut Grove and No. 4 Red Rock Central will be at home in Lamberton against No. 5 Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda. Sectional semifinal games will take place Saturday; all are scheduled for 3 p.m. starts.

The Sibley-Ocheyedan girls cross country team qualified for next week’s state meet in Fort Dodge, Iowa thanks to a solid performance Thursday in Orange City.


The Generals, paced by individual champion Madison Brouwer, were third overall as a team Thursday. Also placing in the top 10 were Maddie Marco, who was third, and Bria Wasmund, who finished eighth.


Among the boys, Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Alejandro Bernal also qualified for state with a four-place finish. The state meet will take place Oct. 29

The Worthington Trojans volleyball team traveled to New Ulm Thursday night and was defeated 3-1 by the Eagles. Game scores were 25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23.


Ellie Weg had 13 kills to top the Trojans offensively, while Tarren Spartz added 11 kills and Madison Beckmann had 10. Weg and Olivia Hayenga each had four blocks. Brooklyn Scheitel-Taylor contributed 12 digs; Tarren Spartz had nine and Weg eight.


In serving, Tarren Spartz was 15-of-17 for seven points along with five aces, and Kamryn Spartz was 10-for-12 with three points and one ace. Scheitel-Taylor was 10-for-11 with four points and an ace, while Addison Gerber was 18-for-20 with nine points and an ace.


Gerber also passed for 36 set assists for the Trojans, who are now 15-14 overall this season.

The Minnesota West Lady Jays alumni basketball game will played at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30. All Lady Jays alumni are invited to play, or just show up and see old friends.
