HL-O/F sweeps girls-boys hoops twinbill; WHS boys hockey wins

The Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes swept a girls-boys basketball doubleheader Tuesday night in Adrian, first winning the girls matchup 59-55 and then capturing the boys game 57-45.

In the girls game, it was Adrian-Ellsworth starting slowly but then going on a 15-0 run in the first half to build a 25-15 advantage at intermission. The Dragons forced multiple turnovers in the backcourt during the surge, but the Coyotes would do the same to their hosts in the second half.

A-E added to its 10-point lead early in the second half, but HL-O/F exploded for a run of its own. A Renae Salentiny layup with 11:15 to go in the half tied the score at 32, and a 3-pointer by Ashton Reierson put the Coyotes ahead to stay, 35-32, a few seconds later.

Both Salentiny and Reierson had big second halves, as Salentiny ended the game with 23 points and Reierson had 22. Shandra Cuperus poured in 30 points for Adrian. The Coyotes are now 5-3; the Dragons 1-6.

In the boys matchup, HL-O/F went on 10-0 run late in the first half and wound up leading 32-27 at halftime. Bryce Nielsen led all scorers with 23 points as the Coyotes improved their record to 2-4. Matthew Geister had 12 points and Darwin Demarrias-Jansma 11 for A-E, which is 0-4.
