District 518 listening session slated for next Monday night

The Worthington Independent School District 518 Board of Education will host a public listening session from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, in the Worthington High School band room.

The purpose of the listening session is to gather thoughts, concerns, feedback and other input from the District 518 community regarding draft policy 606.1. The proposed policy, 606.1, provides direction in handling questioned materials and potentially controversial issues within the district's schools. The draft policy can be found on the school district’s webpage, isd518.net.

At listening sessions, board members, the superintendent, or other members of district administration may ask clarifying questions or seek additional information, but they will not make decisions. Anyone intending to speak at the listening session must complete a request form. The form is included on the district’s website and can be submitted in advance of the meeting. Individuals are also welcome to fill out the form the night of the listening session.

Speakers at the listening session will be prioritized in the order of students; parents/guardians of students; district residents; district employees; and all others. Persons who do not get a chance to speak or cannot attend the meeting are encouraged to submit written comments to the school board.

A maximum amount of time per participant will be set by the board chairman, dependent on the number of individuals signed up to speak. A complete list of guidelines for Monday’s listening session – which also apply to other such sessions hosted by the school district – that include appropriate conduct during the event is available at isd518.net.
