Athletes from across southwest Minnesota competed Thursday in the first day of the Minnesota Class A track and field meet at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
Top efforts on the day came fromMany Luverne’s Jenna DeBates, who came in second in the girls 3200-meter finals, and teammate Owen Janiszeski, who was fourth in the boys 3200-meter finals with a personal record time. Windom’s Job Ogeka was third in the boys triple jump finals, and Southwest Minnesota Christian-Edgerton’s Aidan Schaap was seventh with a PR in the same event.
Most of Thursday’s competition consisted of preliminary action, with finals scheduled for Friday. Brynn Bakken of Hills-Beaver Creek had a PR and finished second in the girls 100-meter prelims, advancing to the finals. She also advanced to the girls 200-meter finals with a second-place finish.
Luverne’s Ryan Fick took third in the boys 800-meter prelims to advance to the finals, as did Kody Wassman of Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey, who took seventh. Ben Dahlin also advanced to the finals round with a fifth-place finish in the boys 200-meter prelims. Also advancing to the finals were: Cade Swenhaugen of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton, sixth in the boys 300-meter hurdles prelims; the Hills-Beaver Creek girls 4x100 relay team, seventh in the prelims; and Luverne’s Cassi Chesley, eighth in the girls 800-meter prelims.
Others competing Thursday included: Rebecca Cheadle of Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda, ninth in the girls high jump finals; Dahlin, 11th in the boys 100-meter prelims; Augusta Papik of Luverne, 13th in the girls 100-meter hurdles prelims and 21st in the girls high jump finals; Jackson Gacke of Hills-Beaver Creek, 13th in the boys shot put finals; Reinha John of Luverne, 14th in the girls 300-meter hurdles prelims; Alabama Hoonhorst of Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda, 16th in the girls discus finals; Hannah Sneller of Luverne, 17th in the girls discus finals; Bakken, 21st in the girls long jump finals; and Elijah Woodley of Luverne, 21st in the boys shot put finals.
The second day of the state Class A meet -- and the first day of the state AA meet – is Friday.
