Bluejays light up second-half scoreboard in 51-7 football win

Armon Vinson passed for 323 yards and threw for five touchdowns Saturday as Minnesota West beat Central Lakes 51-7 in Brainerd.
Vinson, who has thrown for 12 TDs in the last two games, connected with Kevonte Vignaude for two scores and Tavion Jackson, Talik Brooks and Kaylon Bursey for one each. Vinson also ran for a touchdown and led the Bluejays with 51 yards rushing.
Minnesota West, now 3-2, trailed 7-0 early in the first quarter following a three-yard interception return for a TD. The Bluejays later led 16-7 at the half and turned the game into a rout in the third and fourth quarters.
Three different players — Dorius Bell, Kaleb Holt-Jones and Marques Sarkor — recovered fumbles in the game for fourth-ranked Minnesota West, now 3-2. The Bluejays host Rochester this coming Saturday.

The Lady Jays volleyball team went 1-1 on the weekend, losing an epic five-setter at Rochester 3-2 and then sweeping Western Tech 3-0 in LaCrosse, Wis.
Game scores in the Rochester match were 31-29, 22-25, 14-25, 25-14, 15-13. Against Western Tech, Minnesota West grabbed a 25-23, 25-11, 25-11 triumph.
Sadie Krahling had 23 kills on the weekend, Raya Van Beek had 21 and Ally Nelson 20. Kate Slettum accumulated 62 set assists in the Rochester match alone and 77 overall. Kadyn Paulson led in digs with 33. Aleah Wagner contributed 32 digs and topped the Lady Jays in ace serves with six.
Minnesota West, currently ranked second in the country, is now 21-3. It hosts Dakota County Technical College at 3 p.m. Monday and the Dordt JV later in the day at 7 p.m.

Charger Erlandson threw three touchdown passes, ran for another and returned a fumble for another score as Adrian-Ellsworth rolled to a 45-6 home win Friday over visiting Mountain Lake Area.
The Dragons led 45-0 at halftime in improving to 3-2 on the season. Erlandson's TD passes covered 41 yards to Jackson Jenniges, 30 yards to Jesse Bullerman and 23 yards to Jayden Lautt. He had a 10-yard rushing TD for Adrian-Ellsworth's first score and also had the last Dragon touchdown, running a fumble back 15 yards with 2:12 left before halftime.
Jenniges also had a big game for A-E, as he caught a TD pass, brought back a punt 52 yards for a score and had nine tackles — including three for losses — and a forced fumble.
The Dragons will play this coming Friday at Granada-Huntley-East Chain-Truman.

New Ulm led visiting Worthington 42-0 at halftime and went to defeat the Trojans 49-6 on Friday night.
The Eagles outgained WHS in yardage by a 406-62 margin. Miguel Moreno scored the lone Trojans' touchdown on a one-yard run late in the third quarter.
Logan Kerkaert topped the Worthington defense with nine total tackles, Brayden Raymo had six total tackles, one of them for a loss. Fino Noeno had an interception.
WHS, now 0-5, hosts Waseca this Friday.

In boys soccer on Saturday afternoon, the Trojans were beaten at Mankato East 2-1. WHS is now 10-4-1 on the year. WHS coach Juan Flores said that it just wasn't his team's day and that it didn't play well, adding that he thought it "was our worst game of the season for sure." Andy Guzman had the lone goal for Worthington, which is slated to meet Tri-City United on Thursday for the Big South Conference title.
In girls soccer, the Trojans were beaten 9-0 at Jordan.

In high school volleyball Saturday, WHS competed in four matches in a tournament in Rochester. The Trojans were defeated 2-0 by Mankato West, Alden-Conger and Lewiston-Altura and then won 2-0 against Rochester John Marshall.
The Trojans, now 7-10 overall, will meet both Dawson-Boyd and Wabasso this Friday in Marshall.

In Thursday girls tennis action, host Pipestone Area defeated Worthington 6-1.
No. 2 singles player Kah Blu Moo had the lone win on the day for the Trojans, as she posted a 6-2 6-2 triumph. WHS almost picked up two other victories. No. 1 singles player Lily Brown was edged 6-2 3-6 13-11, and the No. 3 doubles duo of Claire Schulz and Isabella Poe was narrowly beaten 4-6, 6-2 10-8.
