Area Sports Roundup: Jan. 31, 2022

Olivia Hayenga scored 33 points and Tarren Spartz and Ellie Weg added 11 points apiece Monday night as the Worthington Trojans girls basketball team outlasted visiting St. Peter, 71-67, in overtime.


The Trojans led 50-38 with 6:45 left in regulation, but St. Peter came roaring back and tied the game at 59-59 in the waning seconds when Rhyan Holmgren drained a 3-pointer. The Saints then scored the first four points of overtime, but Pam Gora – seeing playing time after a pair of WHS players had fouled out – hit a 3 of her own to put the Trojans ahead to stay.


Worthington improved to 11-6 with the victory, while St. Peter fell to 17-4. Holmgren led the Saints with 22 points, and Annika Southworth had 21.

In boys basketball Monday, the Trojans dropped a 74-55 decision on the road at Kasson-Mantorville. Kaleb Knothe and Jacari Swinea each had 14 points for Worthington, and Jake Brandner had 12. Knothe also had a team-best 12 rebounds and four assists for the Trojans, now 3-12 overall.

In boys hockey, New Ulm’s Braxton Hoffman scored with just 35 seconds left in the third period, and the visiting Eagles edged the Trojans 5-4. Worthington led four different times in the game, but New Ulm tied it up each time before netting the game-winner.


Blake Ahrenstorff scored just 1:44 into the game on an assist from Konner Honius, and Spenser Nickel had the second Trojans goal at 5:04 of the first period on passes from Ahrenstorff and Honius. Ian Bumgardner scored on a pass from Alec Langerud at 6:21 of the second period, and Blake Luinenburg added a goal just 16 seconds into the third on assists from Langerud and Andrew Benson.


New Ulm outshot Worthington, now 8-9 on the season, 52-28 in the game. Trojans goalie Steven Adams made 47 saves.

In the girls game earlier Monday, New Ulm blanked the Trojans, 9-0. Worthington was outshot 56-8 by the Eagles.
