The Adrian-Ellsworth baseball season came to a close Wednesday night as the Dragons were edged by Lac Qui Parle Valley 3-2 in the Section 3A Tournament’s elimination bracket final.
The Dragons and Eagles played a scoreless first two innings before Adrian-Ellsworth grabbed the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third. Keagan Polzine connected for a one-out single and after Jack Jenniges flew out to deep left, courtesy runner Charger Erlandson stole second base. Kyler Kunkel followed with a grounder to short, but the relay throw was dropped at first, allowing Kunkel to reach and Erlandson to come around and score.
Jesse Bullerman proceeded to run for Kunkel, stole second and then scored on an RBI single to short right by Travis Weiss for a 2-0 Dragons’ edge.
Lac Qui Parle Valley scored all of its runs in the fourth inning off A-E starting pitcher Polzine to take the lead, doing so on just one hit. A slow roller that went for an infield hit started things off, and with one out and RBI groundout made it a 2-1 game. An infield error deadlocked the score at two-apiece, and two consecutive hit by pitches resulted in the go-ahead run coming home. Weiss came on to pitch in relief and got a bases-loaded grounder to end the inning,
Kunkel got a two-out base hit in the fifth for the Dragons but was caught stealing to end the inning, Adrian-Ellsworth went three-up, three-down in both the sixth and seventh as Eagles pitcher Dyllon Geiser finished off a complete-game four-hitter.
The Dragons finished the 2024 season with an 11-13 record.
