The Worthington Independent School District 518 Board of Education, during a special meeting Monday night, selected three semifinalists to interview for the district’s superintendent position.

The semifinalists are:

  • Joel Heitkamp, Executive Director of Operations, St. Cloud Area School District

  • Dr. George Nolan, Elementary Principal, Hopkins Public Schools

  • Dr. Douglas Van Zyl, former Superintendent, Lakeville Area Schools

Barb Dorn of the Minnesota School Board Association attended Monday evening's meeting virtually and guided the District 518 board through the next stages in the superintendent search process. It was noted that there were seven applications for the superintendent position, and the MSBA recommended three of those candidates — Heitkamp, Nolan and Van Zyl — to be interviewed.

Prior to the names of the candidates being revealed — which came at the end of the meeting — school board members considered whether or not to concur with the MSBA candidate recommendations. The board ultimately voted 5-2 — with board chair Adam Blume, Darla Agard, Eric Parrish, Erin Schutte Wadzinski and Matt Widboom in favor and Lori Dudley and Ann Mills opposed.

The semifinalists were selected from a pool of applicants based on criteria established by the school board, as well as survey input provided by the public, and staff and students of District 518.

The school board has scheduled interviews for the semifinalists beginning at 10 a.m. Friday. All interviews will be held in the District Office conference room and are open to the public. To ensure a level playing field for all candidates, the interviews will not be livestreamed.

The board is slated to decide who to bring back for a second interview following Friday's interviews. Those final interviews would take place Monday night.
