Windom PD provides update on Saturday incident involving shooter

The Windom Police Department issued an updated press release about an incident that took place Saturday in the community.

The release states that at 3:07 a.m. Saturday, the department was dispatched to the 1000 block of Drake Avenue for a report of shots fired. The reporting party had stated that their neighbor had shot at their house and rounds had entered the residence. 

Shortly after arriving in the area, officers heard additional shots. A perimeter was established, and nearby residents were asked to shelter in place. The High Risk Entry and Arrest Team (HEAT) was requested and responded to assist.

Multiple shots from the residence were fired throughout the incident, which traveled outward and struck neighboring homes and a vehicle. The suspect — identified as James Carey, 69, of Windom, was eventually taken into custody. Carey sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound during the incident and was transported to a hospital; he is currently in stable condition.

Carey had barricaded himself in a crawl space beneath the residence. Several firearms and a large supply of ammunition were located within the crawl space. The Windom PD noted that Carey was given several opportunities and hours to comply throughout the incident. He was ultimately arrested, and charges are pending.

Other agencies providing assistance at the scene included the Windom Fire Department, Windom Ambulance and Cottonwood County Sheriff's Office.
