A youth fishing derby will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Chautauqua Park in Worthington.
The event coincides with Minnesota’s Take a Kid Fishing weekend, in which parents or guardians can fish without a license alongside their children. Hosted by the Worthington Optimists Club, Saturday’s youth fishing derby is open to youths ages 15 and younger, and parents are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Bait for the morning of fishing will be provided by the Optimists; participants will need to bring their own fishing gear (rod, reel and tackle). The Optimists will serve hot dogs and lemonade to all participants following the derby.
Door prizes will be awarded for the biggest fish and most fish caught during the derby. A casting contest is also planned. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: ages 11 to 15, 6 to 10 and 5 and younger.
