YM/1stSgt Brooklynn Tyrell of Fulda was formally recognized during Buffalo Ridge Young Marines drill on Saturday for her heroic actions in assisting a teacher during a medical emergency at school.
Unit Commander Dan Harrington presented the Young Marines Lifesaving Award 3rd Degree, a national-level award recognizing acts of heroism involving the lifesaving or attempted lifesaving of another human being, animal or wildlife while serving in any capacity within the Young Marines program.
Tyrell, the daughter of Heath Mitchell and Mandy West of Fulda, has been an active member of the Young Marines since January 2020 and currently serves as First Sergeant for both the Buffalo Ridge Young Marines and the Midwest Regiment, Division 3, Young Marines.
Following a school blood drive this past March, in which Tyrell herself had donated blood, she observed her substitute teacher showing signs of medical distress while attempting to get fresh air near a classroom window. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Tyrell immediately stepped in to assist as the teacher began to collapse, helping lower him safely to the floor and preventing further injury.
While remaining calm under pressure, she directed another student to seek additional help while she stayed with the teacher. Throughout the incident, Tyrell reassured and monitored him as he lost consciousness a second time before additional staff arrived. Upon their arrival, she continued assisting responders and helped reposition the teacher to facilitate medical care.
“Brooklynn demonstrated exceptional maturity, leadership and courage during a very serious situation,” said Harrington. “Her quick thinking and calm actions likely prevented further injury and reflect the very best qualities of the Young Marines program.”
The Young Marines Lifesaving Award is one of the organization’s highest recognitions for heroic action and selfless service.
