Worthington Legion baseball completes 1-3 weekend in tourney

Worthington's Senior American Legion baseball team went 1-3 this weekend in a Rochester tournament.

Post 5 won the first contest it played in, earning a 5-4 triumph over Rogers. Worthington trailed 4-1 entering the fifth inning but scored once in the fifth, twice in the sixth and once in the seventh.

Manny Saravia connected for a triple and single, and Max Ostrem added a double and single. Dom Pavelko's RBI single tied the game at 4 in the sixth. Tucker Brandner had an RBI on a sacrifice fly, and the go-ahead run came home on a passed ball with two outs.

Max Ostrem threw the first 6 2/3 innings for the pitching win, and Brandner got the final out and earned a rare no-pitch save by picking a runner off first to end the game.

On Saturday, Post 5 played an excellent game against Stewartville, head coach Austin Nunez said, before getting walked off by a score of 3-2. Nunez noted that Stewartville went to the Class 3A Tournament this past spring.

Saravia went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and Brandner chipped in with a double as Worthington outhit Stewartville 7-6. Chase Byrne went 6 1/3 innings on the mound and was the hard-luck loser. He struck out just two but got help from error-free Post 5 defense.

In a second game Saturday, Kasson=Mantorville topped Worthington 15-7. Byrne doubled, singled and drove in a run. Ethan Anderson had a base hit and two RBIs, and Austin Gruis had a hit and RBI,

St. Charles, thanks in part to a 10-run fourth, then beat Post 5 13-1 on Sunday. Worthington is now 7-7 and idle until July 7, when it plays at Tracy.

The Worthington Community Football Club's season came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday as the Toros surrendered a goal in the 90th minute and lost 2-1 to Omaha Street at Trojan Field.

Worthington, competing in a U.S. Premier Soccer League playoff match for the first time in its three-season history, came into the game unbeaten at 8-0-2. The Toros had beaten Omaha Street on the road, 4-2, on May 3, and teams fought to a 3-3 draw in Worthington on May 31.

With its win, Omaha Street will represent the Nebraska/South Dakota/Iowa in nationals. They now have an overall record of 8-1-2 and will next face another Toros team — the Dodge City Toros — on July 5.
