Worthington firefighters were on the scene for about four and half hours Tuesday at a house fire at a Diagonal Road residence.
Worthington Fire Department Chief Pat Shorter said late Tuesday afternoon that the fire department was dispatched at 11:02 a.m. to the house fire at 965 Diagonal Road. Shorter said there was a significant amount of smoke when firefighters arrived, but it wasn't long before the residence was fully engulfed after the fire seemingly started in the rear of the home.
Extreme cold and windy conditions combined to make fighting the fire a challenge, Shorter said. One obstacle was with so much water flowing, there was mist that quickly froze in the air, which led to extra-chilly conditions for firefighters as they often iced up quickly.
Shorter expressed thanks that Kwik Trip donated a gift card to the fire department that was used to purchase food and beverages for firefighters during their extended time at the scene. He added that his crew experienced great success in keeping the fire from spreading despite challenging conditions.
The house, however, is a total loss, Shorter said, and the fire marshal will be on the scene Wednesday morning for investigation. Shorter said an occupant of the home got out in time.
On Facebook, a post from Cesar Montejo Cruz-Amaya on Tuesday afternoon stated that his house had burned down, and that he had one cat missing and was praying for his safe return. "All kindness, compassion and help is accepted in this tough time," he wrote. "Thank you for an amazing community filled with beautiful people."
