The Worthington Fire Department responded early Wednesday afternoon to what fire chief Trent DeGroot described as a garage fire that turned into a house fire.
Worthington firefighters were dispatched at 12:27 p.m. to 24433 Paul Ave. and upon arrival, the two-stall attached garage was filled with smoke with no flames visible. The fire then made its way into the house and resulted in heavy damage to the kitchen and laundry area as well as the roof.
A woman who lived in the home was able to get out of the house and go to her son's home on the same property, DeGroot added. The fire chief also noted that two vehicles were backed out of the garage in time.
DeGroot said fighting the fire went about as perfectly as it could. He added that 22 fire department members showed up to the site, where they remained at the scene for a little less than three hours.
The 14100 block of Oliver Avenue south of Fulda was the site of another fire Wednesday afternoon. Fulda Fire Department Chief Gary Clarke said they were paged at 3:19 p.m. for a burn pit fire that spread to a couple hundred round bales of corn stalks. The Wilmont Fire Department was paged for additional water and personnel, and the Iona Fire Department was later contacted for more water.
Firefighters worked to keep a hoop-style cattle shed and its vinyl roof intact. They succeeded in that effort, and no cattle died or were hurt. Clarke said firefighters released themselves from the scene at 10:23 p.m.
