Worthington firefighters respond to Saturday blaze

Multiple apartments sustained damage as the result of a fire Saturday night in Worthington.

Worthington Fire Department Chief Pat Shorter said Monday morning that firefighters had been dispatched to Sunshine Apartments for a fire that had originated on the second floor. The report of the fire came at 10:41 p.m. Saturday; Sunshine Apartments are located in the 1600 block of Clary Street.

Shorter said that the apartment in which the fire originated, along with neighboring apartments and some units downstairs, sustained damage and displaced their residents. He said multiple people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, and at least two transported to Sanford Worthington Medical Center.

Shorter credited the sprinkler system for containing damage to an extent far less from what it could have been. Firefighters were on the scene for about two hours.
