WHS rallies, advances to boys soccer sectional championship match

The Worthington Trojans will play next week for their fourth trip to the state Class AA boys soccer tournament in the last five years.

The fourth-seeded Trojans stunned No. 1 Mankato East on Thursday, as coach Juan Flores' squad rallied from a 3-0 first-half deficit to win 4-3 in overtime at Kennedy Elementary in Mankato. Saul Galvez knocked in the game-winner with 3:40 to go in OT.

WHS, playing without senior Danny Banegas and Diego Alvarado, advanced to 13-4-1 on the season.

Mankato East scored exactly seven minutes into the game for a 1-0 edge, then made it 2-0 with 13:09 to go before the half. The score went to 3-0 with another Cougar goal with 7:07 before the break, but Elder Lopez got the Trojans within two with 3:39 remaining before the half.

Play in the second half — then in the overtime — was dominated by Worthington. Andy Guzman brought the Trojans to within 3-2 with slightly more than eight minutes gone by in the second half, and Lopez added his second goal with 25:20 remaining in regulation.

WHS will play third-seeded New Ulm, a 3-2 win at No. 2 Westonka, for a berth at state at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in New Prague,
