Trojans get important boys soccer road win against New Ulm, 3-1
The Worthington Trojans' boys soccer team broke a three-match winless skid against New Ulm on Tuesday night as they defeated the Eagles on the road 3-1 in a key Section 2AA matchup.
After the teams played the first half to a 0-0 draw, Juan Palmer got WHS on the board first with about 13 minutes gone by in the second half. New Ulm headed a loose ball into the Trojan net about six minutes later to knot the score.
With 15 minutes remaining in the match, Worthington got its second goal of the night and retook the lead when a corner kick was delivered into the box and ultimately headed into the back of the net by Deymar Rojas. A mere one minute later, Kain Thepmontry found himself with the ball right up the middle and was able to drive the ball into the back of the net for a little bit of Trojan insurance. It was Thepmontry's team-leading 14th goal of the season.
Tuesday's triumph was the sixth straight for WHS, which improved its record to 7-1-1 overall and 2-0-1 in section play. New Ulm is now 8-3 overall and 3-2 in the section.
The Trojans will back at Trojan Field on Thursday for a 7 p.m. matchup against long-time rival Marshall.

In girls soccer on Tuesday, Worthington hosted New Ulm and lost by a score of 12-0. The Eagles are 7-1-2 on the season, while WHS is 0-8. The Trojans play at Marshall on Thursday.

The Worthington Trojans volleyball team traveled to Waseca on Tuesday night and came away with a 3-0 Big South Conference victory. Game scores were 25-18, 25-14, 25-17.
Natalia Martinez led a balanced WHS offensive attack with eight kills while Ava Schutz, Kinley Riemersma and Mara Thier all added six kills each. Mia McNab excelled in the serving department by going 17-for-17 with six aces. Schutz was 15-for-17 serving with two aces, and Rylee Olson was 10-for-10.
Defensively, Kamryn Olson paced the Trojans with 24 digs. Rylee Olson had 15 set assists for Worthington and McNab contributed 12.
The win improved the Trojans' overall record to 10-7, and they're 2-2 in conference play. WHS returns home Thursday to take on Luverne; it will be Meet the Trojans Night.
In other high school volleyball action Tuesday, it was: Adrian-Ellsworth 3, Southwest Minnesota Christian 0; Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda 3, Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey 0; and Jackson County Central 3, Windom 1.

In high school girls tennis Tuesday, the Trojans traveled to Tri-City United and were defeated 7-0. Each of the matches were decided in straight sets.
Worthington will next head to River Valley for a match on Thursday.
