WHS plays host to multiple schools in Thursday track and field meet

Worthington High School hosted 13 teams on Thursday in the Worthington Invitational Meet at Trojan Field. 


In boys competition, Murray County Central finished atop the team standings with 123 points. Among the other schools competing were Worthington, fourth place with 75 points; Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda, fifth with 64.5; Jackson County Central, seventh with 49; and Adrian-Ellsworth, ninth with 38.


Among top-three finishers from the region were: Worthington's Austin Kinser, 1st in 200 meters with a time of 24.06 and second with a personal record in the 100; Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda's Aiden Appel, first in the 3200 meters at 10:53.60 and third in the 1600; HL-O/F's Matthew Stapek, first in the 1600 with a PR of 4:48.03; HL-O/F's Mason Kirchner, first in the pole vault with a PR of 12 feet, 3 inches; the Trojans' Hudson Scheepstra, second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 110 hurdles;  Worthington's Thet Tay, second in the high jump; the Trojans' Dillon Zepeda Carranza, second in the triple jump; Adrian-Ellsworth's Darwin Demarrias-Jansma, second in the 1600; JCC's James Atura, second in the 110 hurdles; HL-O/F's Thaddeus Bray, second in the shot put; JCC's Grant Ambrose, third in the 300 hurdles and third in the pole vault; JCC's Kristoph Olsem, third in the high jump; and A-E's Carter Murphy, third in the 200. 


In girls competition, Hills-Beaver Creek had the highest team total at 104.75 points. Area team placings include JCC, fourth at 80; Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda, sixth at 67; Worthington, seventh at 47.5; and Adrian-Ellsworth, eighth at 34.


Among top-three finishers from the area were: Worthington's Madison Sieve, first in the 800 with a time of 2:44.68; the Dragons' Lucy Thier, first in the triple jump at 32 feet, 9.75 inches; HL-O/F's Laiken Farris, first in the 1600 in 5:30.72; the Coyotes' Alabama Hoornhorst, first in the discus at 120 feet, 5.5 inches; JCC's Nayla Ayers, first in the 3200 with a PR of 12:39.37; the Huskies' Natalia Botello-Ramos, second with a PR in the 100 and second with a PR in the 200; the Trojans' Shayla Juarez, second with a PR in 400; JCC's Stevie Untiedt, second with a PR in the 800;  JCC's Allison Luebben, second in the long jump; the Coyotes' Mara Clarke, second in the 3200; the Huskies' 4x200 relay team, second place; the Huskies' Zadi Farmer, third with a PR in the long jump and third in the triple jump; WHS's Emily Dahlquist, third with a PR in the 800; the Coyotes' Sophia Pearson, third in the high jump; JCC's Amiree Elias Galvan, third in the 200; and A-E's 4x800 relay team, third place.

The Worthington Trojans girls golf team played at Luverne on Thursday and topped the Cardinals ,190 strokes to 211.


Worthington junior Claire Meyer finished as the meet's medalist with a round of 45. Teammate Ella Drost was second overall at 47. Also with counting scores were Ava Schutz, 48, and Greta Mahlberg 50. 


In boys play, the Cardinals defeated the Trojans 175-188. Finishing with the lowest score of the day for Worthington was junior Tyson Petersen, whose round of 44 was good enough for third place.


The next-best WHS round came from Gerrit Larson, who carded a 45 that placed him fourth overall. Also earning counting scores for Worthington were Cameron Krommendyk (49) and Hunter Heitkamp (50).

Worthington's boys' tennis team played a close match at Fairmont High this past Tuesday and was narrowly beaten 4-3.


The Trojans' Moises Segura earned a win at No. 2 singles by scores of 6-1, 6-1 and Ryker Fricke of WHS was victorious at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0. The other Worthington victory was at No. 3 doubles, where Ben Potts and Phineas Landers won 6-1, 6-0. There was a three-setter at No. 1 doubles, at which Cristian Miranda and Colton Olmanson were beaten 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.

On Friday, the Trojans' baseball and softball teams each took on Belle Plaine in doubleheaders. The WHS baseball squad was on the road and was beaten by scores of 10-9 and 9-3. In softball in Worthington, it was Belle Plaine winning by scores of 15-0 and 15-2.
