Cubs get win on diamond Sunday against Pipestone, 3-2

The Worthington Cubs amateur baseball team won one game over the last week while also losing one.

The victory came on Sunday afternoon, as the Cubs were able to outlast Pipestone in extra innings 3-2. Worthington and Pipestone were tied at 1-apiece after seven innings, and the visiting Cubs then scored twice in the top of the eighth. Pipestone tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth but could draw no closer.

Worthington managed just four hits in Sunday's game but was boosted by nine walks. Ethan Meyer collected two hits in the triumph for the Cubs, who got a strong pitching performance from Justin Saufley. He went the first six innings and scattered seven hits, allowed one unearned run and struck out five batters. Max Ostrem got the pitching win, as he tossed the final two innings.

On Wednesday, the Cubs led most of the way before ultimately losing 7-4 at home to Jackson in nine innings. Jackson trailed 4-1 heading into the top of the seventh but score three times to tie it up. The Bulls then added three more in the ninth.

Tyler Linder smashed a two-run homer to power the Cubs offensively. Eli Gaul doubled, singled and scored a run, and Blake Ahrenstorff also contributed an RBI base hit. Tucker Brandner started on the mound and allowed two runs while striking out 14 over the first six innings.

Worthington is now 4-6 in league play and 5-7 overall. It plays next on Sunday at home against Luverne.
