WHS boys soccer team stays hot with 3rd straight shutout win

The Worthington Trojans boys soccer team won for the fourth straight time Saturday while also earning its third consecutive shutout victory as they topped Austin 3-0 at Trojan Field.

WHS held a 1-0 edge at halftime thanks to a goal from Cristobal Lopez. In the second half, the Trojans tallied their second goal after slightly more than six and a half minutes had gone by when Roelme Gonzalez scored on a close-range shot that beat the Packers' goalkeeper to his left. Worthington got its third and final goal on a header from Danny Banegas with slightly more than 17 minutes gone by in the second half.

Meanwhile, the Trojan defense effectively smothered Austin. Goalkeeper Adrian Flores leapt to save one shot in the second half; his only other test before the final horn sounded was a hard one-bouncer right at him from about 20 yards out.

WHS, now 6-2, will play its next match on Tuesday evening at Fairmont.

Worthington kept things close early, but St. Peter scored the game's final 35 points to wind up with a 50-6 triumph Friday night in the Trojans' home opener.

The Saints scored on their first two possessions of the game, but the Trojans took advantage of great field position after a high St. Peter snap on a punt. A 20-yard pass from Isaiah Schroeder to Dominic Pavelko made it a 15-6 game with 9:26 left before halftime.

The Saints, though, got a pair of short rushing touchdowns from Ryan Moelter to go up 29-6 at the half. St. Peter added two more TDs — including one more from Moelter — in the third quarter and another near the end of the fourth.

Schroeder completed 6-of-14 passes for 88 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the game. Pavelko had four catches for 72 yards, and Miguel Moreno paced the rushing attack with 53 yards on 11 carries. Fino Noeno had seven solo tackles on defense, and Logan Kerkaert had a combined eight tackles.

WHS, now 0-2, will play at home this coming Friday against Austin.
