Weber praises passage of 2026 legislative bonding bill

District 21 Senator Bill Weber of Laverne reflected Monday morning about the just-completed Minnesota legislative session. Weber did note the passing of a bonding bill.

"It's somewhat over $1.2 billion, and there are a few communities in my district that will get some money from that," he explained. "Over half of the money that was allocated goes to water, wastewater projects, local communities for their items that they need. And then there's also a large amount that goes into highway trust user bond for highway purposes, roads and bridges."

Weber said he believes this year's bonding bill is a positive accomplishment.

"In the 14 years that I've been there, I have voted for every bonding bill that has passed, and there will be some who criticize me for that," he said. "But, at some point, you have to invest in the infrastructure of your state and your communities.

"I won't deny that there have been times, quite frankly, that when there's been too much cash strewn out in a cash bill, which only requires a majority vote," Weber added. "There has been far too much that has gone to nonprofit organizations rather than to local units of government, et cetera. I think with the fraud situation that has been uncovered, that is continuing to be uncovered, we might be able to get much of that under greater control and certainly saw that happen this year."
