The Worthington Community Football Club Toros began their 2024 soccer season with a 4-3 triumph over Leon Saturday night at Trojan Field.

The Toros, beginning their second United Premier Soccer League season, built a 2-0 halftime advantage. Forward Anton Cordes, a standout for the Minnesota West Bluejay soccer team last fall, put the Toros up 1-0 with a goal in the 16th minute of play. Juan Mackrey would get Worthington’s second goal of the match with a header off a cross from Prince Lebbi.

Leon tallied the initial goal of the second half to close the Toros’ lead to one, but Isaac Ramirez fed Mackrey for another goal for a 3-1 Worthington lead. Cordes got his second score of the game to put the Toros up 4-1 in the 59th minute, and Worthington was able to hold off Leon in the end. Goalkeeper Richardo Moldonado played a key role in the triumph, notching multiple huge saves – including a game-clinching penalty kick save.

Los Toros will be on the road for their next match, which will be on May 5 against the Vlora Football Club in Burnsville. They’ll be back at Trojan Field the following weekend as they take on Superior SC at 5 p.m. May 11. Other home matches this season include: 7 p.m. May 18 against FC Minneapolis; 6 p.m. May 29 against the St. Cloud Blackhawks; and 7 p.m. June 5 against Austin Villa.
