Two transported to Spirit Lake's hospital following Wednesday crash

A head-on collision Wednesday on U.S. 71 near the Iowa-Minnesota border resulted in minor injuries.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 2012 Buick Lacrosse operated by Brooklyn Holmes, 20, of Jackson, was southbound on U.S. 71 and was attempting to pass two vehicles in a no-passing zone when she collided with a northbound 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse operated by Geovani Rodriguez Gonzalez, 18, of Austin.

Authorities say Holmes was able to get out of her vehicle before it went up in flames and was destroyed. Both Holmes and Gonzalez were taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake. The vehicle driven by Rodriguez Gonzalez was also totaled.

Holmes was cited for passing in a no-passing zone. The collision took place around noon Wednesday and resulted in the highway in that area being temporarily closed.
