Trojans split hoops doubleheader in Edgerton

New Gora scored 19 points and the Worthington Trojans girls basketball team fought off three separate rallies from Southwest Minnesota Christian to record a 76-71 win Saturday in Edgerton.


Madison Beckmann contributed 15 points – 13 of them coming in the second half – while Ellie Weg added 14 points and eight rebounds. Tarren Spartz contributed 13 points for Worthington. Pam Gora had nine points and nine assists as the Trojans improved to 1-1.


For the Eagles, who dropped to 0-3, Kinsie Nelson led the way with 14 points. Makenzie Pap chipped in with 13 and Makenna Moss had 12.


In the boys basketball game that followed, Southwest Minnesota Christian bounced back from an eight-point second-half deficit and topped Worthington 74-69. The Eagles improved to 2-0, while the Trojans dropped their initial outing of the season.


Abagotte Opiew led the way for WHS with 20 points while Kaleb Knothe added 14. Dawson Rieck hit for 17 points for Southwest Minnesota Christian, including a long-range momentum-boosting 3-pointer late in the second half. Trevin Prins added 16 points, while Aiden Schaap and Bennett Talsma each had 12.

In a girls/boys hockey doubleheader on Friday night, it was New Ulm shutting out Worthington in both games. New Ulm captured the girls game 10-0, dropping WHS to 1-3 on the year. In the first boys hockey game of the winter for the Trojans, it was New Ulm coming away with a 12-0 victory.

The Minnesota West women’s basketball team improved to 10-1 on the year with a pair of home victories over the weekend. The Lady Jays cruised past Minnesota North-Rainy River 98-50 on Saturday, just a few hours after posting a 84-68 triumph over the Dordt College JV.


In Saturday’s contest, it was Olivia Hayenga giving Minnesota West a big boost with 24 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals. Madisyn Huisman contributed 16 points, five rebounds and four assists. Three other players scored in double figures for the Jays – Audrey Drapeau scored 19, Dannyn Peterson 12 and Tia Murray 10.


On Friday, Minnesota West avenged its only loss of the season as Murray scored 22 points and connected on all 12 of her free-throw attempts. Hayenga had 18 points, Huisman added 16 and Peterson had 14. Brooklyn Scheitel-Taylor grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.


The Minnesota West men, meanwhile, exploded for a 30-point on Friday, roaring past Minnesota North College-Hibbing for a 109-79 victory. The Bluejays were then defeated by Minnesota North-Rainy River 91-82 on Saturday and are now 3-7 on the season.


Against Hibbing, Brock Bruns scored 24 points for the Jays while shooting 8-of-9 from the field. Elijah Williams had 13 points, Nathan Kindred chipped in with 12 and Dillon Jackson added 10. Kindred led the Bluejays in rebounding with seven; Bruns also had a team-best five assists along with six rebounds.


Against Rainy River, Kindred led the way with 23 points and eight rebounds. Jackson had 18 points to go along with eight assists, and Williams had 18 points with five steals.
