Trojans skate to 6-0 boys hockey triumph over RV

The Worthington Trojans celebrated Senior Night in style Thursday night as they blanked Redwood Valley 6-0 behind a three-point night from Easton Newman and a shutout in net from Alvaro Szewierenko Bottcher.

The Trojans outshot the visiting Cardinals 13-4 in a first period in which both teams failed to score. That 0-0 deadlock was quickly broken in the second period, when Ian Bumgardner scored on a pass from Spenser Nickel just 54 seconds in for a 1-zip WHS lead. Then, at the 3:18 mark, it was Newman getting his first goal of the night on a feed from Dawson Duangapai for a 2-0 edge. Newman had his second at 8:34 of the second period, during which the Trojans put 15 shots on net compared to just three for Redwood Valley.

Worthington started fast once again in the third period, as Caden Van Brisen scored just 33 seconds in on passes from Trenton Chantharath and Evan Bumgardner. Dunagapai got the Trojans’ fifth goal less than a minute later on a pass from Newman, and Anthony Jimenez’s power play goal on a Nickel assist at 6:12 wrapped up the scoring.

Bottcher, a senior transfer student from Brazil who had never played ice hockey until this year, stopped all nine shots he faced. WHS, now 6-13 on the season, finished with 44 shots on net.

The Trojans’ wrestling team hosted a triangular meet on Thursday against Minneota and Dawson-Boyd/Lac Qui Parle/Montevideo United, falling in both their dual matches.

Against the Vikings, Dalton Larson picked up Worthington’s only points by capturing a 7-2 decision at 133 pounds. In the other Trojans’ dual, it was Alex Galvez getting a win for WHS at 127 pounds via a 6-5 decision.
