Trojans post volleyball, boys soccer victories

Jayden Spartz had 14 kills, 18 digs and two blocks and Madison Beckmann added 16 kills and six blocks as the Worthington Trojans topped visiting Spirit Lake in girls volleyball 3-1. Game scores were 25-14, 25-14, 26-28, 25-23.


Janessa Hammann contributed 13 kills for WHS, which improved to 6-6 on the season. Addison Gerber had 39 set assists, 10 digs and an ace serve, while Regan Schaefer went 23-of-23 serving with three aces.

The ninth-ranked Worthington boys soccer team picked up its second win over St. Peter in two matches this season as the Trojans won 4-1 at St. Peter.


Jonathan Banegas, Jose Chavez, Danny Banegas and Carlos Castillo had one goal each in the triumph as the Trojans advanced their record to 9-2. Coach Juan Flores said he thought the team played well together, adding that he hopes it can carry its current momentum into its next match. That next match will take place next Tuesday when the Trojans host Marshall, which beat WHS the first time they met this season.

In girls soccer Thursday, St. Peter built a 3-0 lead on host Worthington at halftime and went on to defeat the Trojans, 4-0.

Fanuel Wolday of Worthington took first place Thursday in the boys race at the Jackson County Central Tri for Health cross country meet, winning with a time of 16:24.42. Austin Kinser took eighth for the Trojans and Asrat Bonnett was ninth as WHS finished third as a team with 57 points. Windom Area had 45 and Luverne had 49.


Among other competitors for the Trojan boys were: Caleb Meyer, who finished 26th; Welbaka Morke, 31st; Holden Meyer, 33rd.


Madison Sieve was the highest placer for Worthington in the girls race, coming in 10th. Luverne’s Jenna DeBates was the individual winner as the Cardinals finished first as a team with 26 points. Worthington had 81 points.


Also running for the Trojans were: Kenadie Thiner, who was 15th; Annabelle Hardwood, 21st; and Anaka Wede, Anna Gordon and Iris Ramirez, who were 31st, 32nd and 33rd, respectively.
