Trojans nip Mound Westonka 1-0 in boys soccer sections

Daniel Henriquez broke a scoreless draw with a goal late in the first half and the Worthington Trojans defense made it stand up the rest of the way as WHS earned a 1-0 Section 2AA Boys Soccer Quarterfinals win over Mound Westonka on Tuesday night at Trojan Field.

The Trojans will play at second-seeded Marshall, a 2-1 overtime winner over Mankato West, at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Henriquez got his goal with 4:25 remaining in the first half. The goal was the only one Worthington got Tuesday after the team topped the White Hawks 9-0 in its first half of the season.

It didn't hurt that the defense of third-seeded WHS denied No. 6 Mound Westonka good scoring opportunities in the second 40 minutes. The Trojans improved to 11-3-3 on the fall. Check out our podcasts page for comments from head coach Juan Flores.

The seventh-seeded Worthington Trojans girls soccer team saw its season come to an end Thursday as it lost at No. 2 seed Mankato East, 10-0.

The Trojans, who finished the year with a single win, hung around for most of the first half and only trailed 1-0 with approximately 10 minutes left before the half, coach Josue Hernandez said. The Cougars, though, would end up taking a 5-0 edge into the break, and Worthington couldn't recover.

Hernandez said he hopes the girls soccer program can evolve by changing its collective mentality, while also having its players work hard and improve conditioning.
