The Worthington Trojans will open the Section 3AAA playoffs with a matchup against long-time area rival Luverne.

The Trojans, who concluded the regular season with a 2-6 record, will face the Cardinals at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Luverne. WHS is the sixth seed, while the Cardinals are the 3 seed.

Worthington has lost four consecutive games entering the postseason following back-to-back road victories in September over Austin and Albert Lea. Luverne, meanwhile, began its year by winning its first seven matchups, a run that was capped by a 36-30 triumph at Jackson County Central. While that snapped a 32-game JCC win streak, Luverne was then beaten this past Tuesday by Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial to end the regular season.

Tuesday's Worthington-Luverne winner will meet the victor of a game between second-seeded Waseca and No. 7 Albert Lea on Saturday.

In the Section 3 9-man football playoffs, meanwhile, 6-2 Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda has a number-three seed and will host No. 6 Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Adrian-Ellsworth is a 4 seed; the 6-2 Dragons will entertain fifth-seeded Edgerton that evening. Unbeaten Hills-Beaver Creek, the defending state champion, is the second seed and has a first-round bye.
