Trojans girls hockey team gets second win of season

The Worthington Trojans girls hockey team scored five goals in the second period Wednesday and went on to beat Morris/Benson Area 10-7 in the second day of a tournament in Morris.

The Trojans got two goals from Megan Dykstra in the first period, which ended in a 2-2 tie. Goals by Peyton Nickel and Addison Joens in the opening two minutes of the second period put WHS ahead 4-2, and after Morris/Benson Area scored three times to grab a 5-4 edge, Dykstra completed her hat trick to make it 5-5. Riley Nickel would go on to add a pair of goals for Worthington as the Trojans grabbed a 7-5 advantage entering the third period.

Lauren Nelson scored twice in 27 seconds in the first minute of the third period to put the Trojans up 9-5. Riley Nickel finished her hat trick later for the final Worthington goal of the day.

Marin Pederson contributed three assists in the win for WHS, which improves to 2-6 this season. Nelson added a pair of assists.

Kaleb Knothe drove through the lane and banked in a shot with 3.5 seconds to go Wednesday to give the Trojans the lead and Morris missed a desperation shot at the buzzer as Worthington earned a 52-51 victory at a tournament in Fergus Falls.

Knothe and Abagotte Opiew each had 11 points to boost a balanced Trojan scoring attack in what coach Clint Meyer called a physical game against a good team.
