Trojans get first volleyball, boys soccer victories of season

The Worthington Trojans girls volleyball team outlasted Tri-City United on Tuesday night, winning the first two games and then dropping the next two before pulling out a 3-2 victory. Game scores were 27-25, 25-19, 15-25, 23-25, 15-11.


The Trojans trailed 10-4 early in game one before rallying. Tri-City United was then down by as many as three before bouncing back and having a game-point opportunity at 24-23. The Titans couldn't close it out, though, and WHS earned the win.


In game two, the Trojans and Tri-City United were tied 11-11, but Worthington went on a run and led by as many as eight points on its way to the triumph. The tables would turn big-time in game three, and the Titans then eked out a back-and-forth game four to set the stage for the finale. 


Alaina Feit had 13 kills for the Trojans, Kamryn Olson contributed 30 digs and four ace serves and Mara Thier added seven kills and three ace serves. Natya Khamphanh passed for 35 set assists, had four aces on 25-on-25 serving and had three blocks. WHS is now 1-1.

The WHS boys soccer team also got its first win of the year Tuesday, as it took care of host St. Peter 4-2.


Danny Banegas, Andy Guzman, Cristobal Lopez and Cristian Melendez each scored goals for the Trojans. Coach Juan Flores noted that his team didn't play very well in the first half but improved in the second.  Worthington couldn't connect many consecutive passes and needs to be more consistent, but most importantly got the victory. The Trojans host Tri-City United on Thursday and Southwest Minnesota Christian on Friday.

In girls soccer Tuesday, the Trojans were blanked by visiting St. Peter 11-0. They're now 0-2.

In high school cross country action Monday, the Worthington boys were fourth out of five teams at the Marshall Cross Country Invitational. Asrat Bonnett was the Trojans' highest finisher, taking ninth place with a time of 17:31.6. Austin Kinser placed 11th, Ryan Phelps 27th, Andrew Olague 32nd, Jose Chavez Vega 37th and Holden Meyer 42nd.


In girls competition, Worthington was fourth and was led by Madison Sieve, who was 20th with a time of 22:12.6. Emily Dahlquist was 28th, Anna Gordon 33rd, Myranda Widboom 37th, Annabelle Hardwood 38th and Nevaeh Roesner 39th.
