The Trojans' boys soccer team will now play a berth in the state tournament following their 3-1 home victory Thursday night over New Ulm in the Section 2AA semifinals.

The top-seeded Trojans were led by Eddy Chavez, who scored all three goals in the victory. WHS will next play Mankato West, a 2-1 victor over Westonka Thursday, at 5 p.m. Tuesday in New Prague with a trip to state on the line.

Worthington, which also topped New Ulm earlier this season by a 3-1 score, controlled possession for the majority of the first half, but couldn't capitalize. The first 40 minutes ended with the Trojans and Eagles in a scoreless draw.

Then, in the second half, it was New UIm getting the match's first goal with a little more than 20 minutes remaining. WHS, though, dug deep, and Chavez answered with an equalizer just about four minutes later. Roughly five minutes after that, Chavez put the ball in the net for the second time for a 2-1 Trojans edge.

Chavez completed his hat trick and — more importantly — gave Worthington some insurance when he netted his third goal with about seven minutes to go.

WHS, now 15-3-1 overall this season, avenged its 2-1 loss to New Ulm in the Section 2AA title match. The Trojans are the No. 1 seed in the section; New Ulm was the four seed.
