Trojans boys get hoops win over Marshall; WHS gymnasts are first at quadrangular meet

The Worthington Trojans boys basketball team broke a long losing streak against the Marshall Tigers with a decisive 67-40 win Friday night in Marshall.

WHS led 29-23 at the half and overwhelmed Marshall in the second half to improve to 1-1 on the season. Abagotte Opiew led the way for the Trojans with 26 points, while Marenono Opiew added 14 points and Kaleb Knothe contributed 12. Worthington will go for its second win on Tuesday at Windom.

Jackson Baynard led the Tigers in scoring with 10 points. Marshall committed 17 turnovers while shooting 27% overall, including 4-of-17 from the free-throw line.

The Worthington High gymnastics team finished first in a four-team quadrangular event Friday at New-London Spicer, winning with 138.4 points.

Olivia Barber boosted the Trojans by taking second in the all-around with a composite score of 35.3. Barber also tied for second on the floor with a 9.05, tied for second on the beam at 9.0 and was second on the bars at 8.65.

Cristy Banegas finished first on the floor with a score of 9.2, tied for second on the vault at 9.0 and was third in the all-around at 35.25. Among other Trojans, Addison Gerber finished tied for second on the floor.

The Trojan gymnasts are next scheduled to compete Tuesday at Fairmont.

The Worthington Trojans had four wrestlers place during Saturday’s Jackson County Central Pizza Ranch Invitational Tournament.

Ethan Meyer earned a second-place finish for the Trojans at 132 pounds, and Oscar Galvez was third at 126 pounds. Mason Schutz was fifth at 195 and Alex Galvez sixth at 113.

Host JCC had three individual champions on the day and placed second overall in the 17-team event behind Hutchinson. One of the day’s other individual champions was Jaren Tinselman of Adrian-Ellsworth, who won at 220 pounds.

In girls hockey Saturday afternoon, it was visiting Minnesota River outshooting Worthington 43-8 and blanking the Trojans 7-0. WHS is now 1-4 and will next play at home Tuesday against Fairmont.

In boys hockey, Minnesota River took a 1-0 lead just 17 seconds into the game and went on top Worthington 6-1. Easton Newman scored unassisted for the lone goal for the Trojans, who were outshot 41-16. The Trojans are at Fairmont on Tuesday.
