Trojan gymnastics, boys hockey teams post triumphs

The Worthington High School gymnastics team traveled to Marshall on Thursday night and earned a 136.275 to 118.425 win over the Tigers.


Once again, Brooklyn Dykstra was triumphant in the all-around competition for the Trojans as she compiled a total score of 34.675. Taking second in the all-around was teammate Jordis Weber.


Worthington's best events of the night were the vault and floor, where it had each

of the top five placers. Marley Phomsatry came out on top on the vault with a score of 9.1, with teammate Isabella Lazzu finishing as runner-up at 8.95. Dykstra took third, Olivia Bullerman fourth and Weber fifth for the Trojans. On the floor, Dykstra was first at 8.825 and was followed in order by Lazzu, Weber, Kenadie Thiner and Bullerman.


WHS had the top four finishers on the bars Thursday. Jada Milbrath was first with 8.6 and was followed in succession by Dykstra, Thiner and Weber. On the beam, Dykstra placed first with a score of 8.8 while Thiner was second, Weber third and Milbrath fifth.  


The Trojans will travel to Big Lake on Saturday for the State Class A True Team Meet, which includes the top 10 ranked teams in the state.

The Worthington Trojans boys hockey team picked up a road victory Thursday night at Windom, beating the Eagles 3-1.


Worthington took a 2-0 lead in the first period when Spenser Nickel scored on an assist from Mason Ommen and Dominic Pavelko at 6:54 and Ommen scored on assists from Nickel and Lucas Hohenstein at 14:31. After a scoreless second period, a Windom goal three minutes into the third made it 2-1, but Anthony Jimenez got the clincher with 25 seconds remaining on an assist from Ommen.


Goalkeeper Tyson Petersen made 45 saves for the Trojans, who were outshot 46-25. WHS now has a record of 6-13; the Eagles are 5-12-1.

In girls hockey, Worthington scored late in the third period to forge a 2-2 tie with Windom.


After a scoreless first period, Madelyn Cummings' goal 3:40 into the second stanza on an assist from Peyten Nickel gave the Trojans a 1-0 edge. The Eagles' Reagan Haugen answered just seven seconds later, and Haugen scored again with 3:14 left in the second period for a 2-1 Windom lead.


It was Madilyn Polz scoring a power-play goal for Worthington with 2:35 remaining in regulation to tie things up, with Cummings picking up an assist. The teams then played a scoreless overtime.


Windom outshot the Trojans 49-37 in the game as freshman Trojan goalie Macie Mahlberg had 47 saves. WHS now has a season record of 3-15-1; the Eagles are 6-15-2.
