Trojan girls golf team is a strong second in Big South meet

The Worthington Trojans girls golf team placed second in Monday's seven-team Big South event in New Ulm, coming in just one stroke behind first-place Marshall.


The Trojans finished a team score of 200, with Claire Meyer finishing third among individuals with a round of 47. Ashtyn Krohn was sixth overall at 49, and Greta Mahlberg ninth at 51. Ellie Drost had the fourth scoring total for WHS and was 17th overall at 53. Also playing Monday were Giselle Deleon and Ava Schutz, who each had 58. WHS coach Brooke Hermsen noted that she was very proud of her young team competing so well.


In boys play Monday, WHS took part in a Big South event in Waseca and was seventh with a team total of 198. St. Peter was first at 151.


Gerrit Larson had the low round for the Trojans at 44. Hunter Heitkamp and Blake Vosburgh both carded 51s, and Cameron Krommendyk and Brody Pederson each had 52s. Also playing was Easton Drost, who shot 59/

In college baseball Monday, Rochester swept a doubleheader from Minnesota West for the second straight day, winning 12-4 and 10-3 at the Worthington Middle School field.


The Bluejays, who have now lost 11 consecutive games, got a homer, single and three RBIS from Johan Mendoza in the opening game as well as a triple and single from Eliecer Gonzalez. In the second contest, Ales Zhao's two-run double was the biggest blow as Minnesota West managed just four hits.


Now 13-22 overall and 3-9 in conference play, the Bluejays next play two games at the Dakota State JV on Wednesday.

The Worthington Community Football Club — Los Toros — is off to a dominant start.


Los Toros led 1-0 at the half of a chilly Saturday evening game and went to blank Super Stars FC 4-0 at Trojan Field to win for the second time in two matches in the young season. The WCFC sits at the "top of the table" (atop the standings) in the Nebraska-South Dakota-Iowa Division of the U.S. Premier Soccer League. 


It was an explosive night for Jose Velasquez, as he recorded a hat trick for Los Toros. Eli Salisbury also had a goal for the WFSC, which also recorded its second "clean sheet" — or shutout — in two matches.


Saturday was the first home match of the spring for Los Toros, which opened their season with a 5-0 road triumph in Omaha, Neb., over Bana Mkoba Football Club on April 12.  While the whole squad scored in the game, Velasquez led the way with four goals in that match. Salisbury had the other goal in the season-opener.


Los Toros are in their fifth season of competition and starting their third in their current division. The next WCFC match is April 26 at the Capital City Roots Football Club. it then has back-to-back home matches scheduled for both May 1 and 2 at 7 p.m. at Trojan Field. Los Toros will meet the CB Captains FC on the 1st, and the Reapers FC on the 2nd. The team will have two more home matches after that --- on May 16 and 30.
